Why prune in the Winter?

In Colorado, winter provides trees, shrub and perennials time to promote stronger root systems, which makes for healthier plants.

Some dormant trees and shrubs benefit from pruning during the winter enabling the roots to maximize spring growth potential. Additionally this creates stronger branches which in turn helps prevent broken limbs caused by snow, animals or heavy winds. Over grown branches can cluster and rub together making it easier for mites and disease to proliferate.

Proper pruning leaves the garden with oval symmetry as well.

Bad pruning can impact a garden for years and even kill plants and trees. That is why pruning the right trees and plants at the right time of season is very important.

For example, Japanese Maples and Roses should not be pruned until late spring because they can be more cold sensitive and fresh cuts too early in the spring can cause the plant to die back further stunting growth and weakening a healthy plant.

Our philosophy - less is more. We feel more and more companies prune as if it is the last pruning or they forget that every tree and shrub have their own shape. Over pruning trees can not only stunt future growth but also defeat the whole purpose for shaping. Because trees can live for hundreds of years it is especially important to genuinely care for them. When maintained properly, a healthy tree or shrub will provide future generations with a healthier environment.
